Cold, snow, ice and work!!!

Cold and yucky in PA

TUCSON

Thanks Mom and Dad for the "mini vacation". I flew to Tucson last Saturday for 2 1/2days before returning home. The weather in Tucson was not as warm as here in Florida, so need to remember to wait until February to visit next time! We have escaped the bad weather thus far...just rain for us. Hope everyone has a good week despite the snow and cold.

Snow, snow and more snow!

So, when the K-Staters were in town for the KSU bowl game, many of them criticized how poorly the city removed the two feet of snow. What they fail to realize is 1) we're on an island that is 3 miles wide. There is nowhere for the snow to go. and 2) The roads are just fine. But since 90% of this city relies on subways and sidewalks to get around, that is where the real problem is. So with the foot of snow we got on Thursday, I thought I'd share what the city is like in the snow.

One of the side roads on the way to work Thursday morning:And as pretty as this is, it quickly turns into a giant slushy, dirty mess. Which is completely fine. Until you try to cross the street. In which case, it looks like this:
So this quickly turns into a game so slippery, slidey hop scotch where you hope you can clear the slushpuddle of 3 feet and HOPE you don't fall in it. And I've found out that even waterproof shoes aren't quite that waterproof after you've tackled 6" deep 3' wide slush puddles at every corner!

Luckily this year, my behind has not hit the curb yet. But it's usually inevitable in the winter months.

Up today: Watching my Cats beat KU!! And not much else, because those giant slush puddles are at every corner.

Residency News

I received some great news this past week, I was offered a residency position at the Pittsburgh VA. It’s a great position and I’m very excited for the opportunity. After I complete this year-long rotation, I will have completed all my requirements for graduation. I don’t have a formal start date but it will likely be sometime in the month of June. Only one more semester in Gainesville!

Hello from Columbus!

So I knew all about this blog, and then I was asked why I haven't written anything. Well, the reason I found was because Jenny hadn't shared the link with me yet! Anyways, all is good now!

So this past weekend Austin and I decided to take a "mini" vacation since Austin won't get much time off for a while after he starts his new job (there is like a 3 month waiting period for time off). So we decided we would rent a cabin up in the North Georgia mountains. It is fairly close, only three hours, and we thought it would be very relaxing. Plus, we would be able to take Jake with us; we always hate leaving him at home when we leave.

So we looked on the vacation rental by owner websites and chose a cabin. The cabin advertised free WiFI, HDTV with satellite, a hot tub, a great mountain view, etc. We were excited. We e-mailed the owner and asked if they were available and if they thought we would have any problems getting to the cabin because of the the huge snowstorm the weekend before. They said we shouldn't have any problem and that the cabin was available! Awesome, this will be fun!

So it is Saturday morning and we decided to leave pretty early so we could get to the cabin early and start relaxing. Also, we had bought stuff to make chili in our new crock pot when we got there. Once we got to Atlanta you could start seeing the leftover bits of the ice and snow that had fallen the previous weekend, and as we drove further north there was more and more, but the roads were fine. So we are making the last turn onto the road the cabin is on, and of course there is snow and ice covering the road (if you could even call it a road). Its ok, my trusty little civic is making it up the hill pretty well, we have to be to the cabin very soon. Oh wait, the car is stuck! No, we are almost there! (Austin did not know at this point in time of my extreme fear of flying off a mountain in a vehicle) So let's just say, I was freaking out. We were not going anywhere. Finally, a truck starts coming down the hill towards us. He stops and tells us that there is no way we are going to make it up to the cabin because the hill only gets steeper from that point on. We might as well back up and go back down the hill. Well crap, that sucks.

To be continued...

Tokyo

Scott is on an 11 day trip to Asia. He will fly to Portland, Tokyo x 3, Nagoya x 2, Guam, Honolulu and LA before returning to Atlanta. Flight crews stay at the Narita Radisson, aka the Delta Pilot Resort, which is owned by Delta. Posted above are a few pictures from his last trip to Tokyo.
When he arrives home from Asia he has trouble getting his sleep cycle on track with the 15 hour time difference, but this time he flies back over 3 days, so hopefully won't be such a challenge.

5 Days in Dublin

Delta was short of pilots due to the weather, so Scott was able to pick up an "overtime" trip to Dublin....5 days including a 71 hour layover in Dublin. The crew hotel is the Hilton downtown, so he had the opportunity to do plenty of walking around town. Monday, he rode the train about an hour North of town to look at a castle. There was also time to drink a few Guinness.
